Champions League: Antonio Conte and José Mourinho Through the Eyes of Their Assistant

In the competitive landscape of the Champions League, tales of legendary managers often capture the spotlight. Among these stories, none are as captivating as that of Antonio Conte and José Mourinho, as narrated by their trusted assistant, Gabriele Oriali. Once a player and later a coach, Oriali thought he had stepped away from the limelight until Conte called for him during the summer of 2024 when he took over Napoli.

“Antonio called me and said, ‘Come on, let’s go!’” Oriali recalls, reflecting on the initial hesitation he felt at over 70 years old. With ties deeply rooted in Florence, traveling from Parma or Bologna every day had become second nature. However, when faced with the prospect of moving for Conte, he turned to his family for guidance. “I asked my wife and daughters, ‘What should I do?’ They had my bags ready by the door,” he chuckled, illustrating the weight of the decision.

Oriali’s move paid off, culminating in a remarkable title victory in the spring. “Antonio achieved what seemed impossible. I cherish the moments— the parades, the colors, the vibrant scents of the city, and the daily life with incredible people,” he shares, ranking this experience as his third fondest club memory, following his first Italian championship in 1971 and the treble with Inter Milan.

As both Conte and Mourinho continue to shape the narrative of football greatness, Oriali’s reflections remind fans and aspiring coaches alike of the profound connections forged in the world of football.
