Vahid Halilhodzic Reflects on His Journey and Future Aspirations
Vahid Halilhodzic, free since his departure from Morocco before the 2022 World Cup, has opened up in an exclusive interview with Afrik-Foot. The Franco-Bosnian coach provides insights on his ousting from the Moroccan national team, Kylian Mbappé’s Euro performance, the evolution of Paris Saint-Germain, and his strained relationships with certain players. At 71, “Coach Vahid” also shares his thoughts on his future.
Does Spain Deserve Their European Champion Title?
“I believe Spain earned their title. They played well throughout the tournament. World-class talents like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams emerged, and it’s truly deserved for them.”
Disappointing Performances from England and France
“Having a group of good players does not mean having a good team. There needs to be strong teamwork. Spain demonstrated that football should be based on collective play rather than just star names. Italy and Croatia were the biggest disappointments. When players only think about themselves, it doesn’t work.”
Mbappé’s Euro Struggles
“Kylian Mbappé was one of the biggest disappointments of the tournament. He played little at the end of the season with PSG and was surrounded by transfer rumors to Real Madrid. He wasn’t in a good environment before the tournament, and it showed. He also suffered a debilitating injury, affecting his performance. It’s almost normal that he missed his Euro when he’s expected to do everything for the team.”
PSG’s Champions League Struggles
“As a former PSG coach, I finished 2nd in Ligue 1 during the 2003-2004 season. Today’s PSG faces issues due to a flawed sports policy. Accumulating star players like Mbappé, Neymar, and Messi doesn’t work anywhere. The focus should be on creating a cohesive, balanced, and competitive team. The team’s lack of effort and collective play makes it difficult for PSG to win the Champions League.”
Future at PSG?
“If I were heading PSG’s sports direction, I’d emphasize team effort. The team currently runs the least in the Champions League. Football requires movement both with and without the ball. A normal team runs approximately 120 km per match. Without the effort, winning is impossible.”
Is Mbappé’s Departure Good for PSG?
“Mbappé’s move to Real Madrid is good for both parties. He has spent seven successful years at PSG, becoming the top scorer in the club’s history. However, winning the Champions League eluded him. Now, he’s moving to the world’s biggest club, and I wish him success.”
Returning to Football
“I won’t comment on Morocco’s national team. I have received numerous offers since my departure, from national teams in Europe, Africa, and Asia. I’ve been in high-level football for over 40 years, and it’s true I miss it. But family obligations and my unexpected departure from Morocco have made me reconsider immediately diving back in. I will return to football, but I don’t know when yet.”
African Nations’ Interest
“Yes, around 7 to 10 African nations have contacted me. However, I need time to heal from the disappointment in Morocco. Commitment to this job has to be total – physically, morally, and mentally. It’s not just about money; it’s about meaningful sports projects and achieving success.”
Relationships with Players
“I won’t discuss Fiorèse today. Some criticize me for not being buddy-buddy with them, but that’s my nature. As for Rothen, he doesn’t deserve my commentary.”
