Dramatic Turn of Events in Argentina-Morocco Olympic Football Match
In an emotionally charged encounter on Wednesday, the Argentina and Morocco men’s football teams faced off in the opening match of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The final score was 2-1 in favor of Morocco.
The confusion peaked when the Argentine team believed they had equalized in the 105th minute, only for referee Glenn Nyberg to seemingly blow the final whistle moments later. The Argentines were left in disbelief when they later learned that their equalizer had not been validated by the VAR and that the match had not ended, but rather been temporarily halted due to objects, including fireworks, being thrown from the stands at the Argentine players. Order was eventually restored, but not before significant disruptions.
Nearly two hours after the initial incident, the South American equalizer was disallowed for offside, and the match resumed behind closed doors for an additional three minutes. Morocco managed to retain their lead, securing the victory. Javier Mascherano, head coach of Argentina’s U23 team, expressed his frustration with the unfolding drama, describing it as the “biggest circus I’ve ever seen in my life.”
There are rumors that Argentina is considering an appeal to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) regarding the handling of the match.
