In a significant move in women’s football, Fatima Tagnaout, a linchpin for AS FAR Rabat over the past eight years, is set to ply her trade in Europe in the upcoming season.
Fatima Tagnaout’s journey with AS FAR has come to an end. Joining the club in 2016, the 25-year-old midfielder quickly became a vital component, contributing to numerous title-winning campaigns for the Rabat-based team. Now, she embarks on a new chapter, crossing the Strait of Gibraltar to join Sevilla FC. The Andalusian club announced her signing on their official website, noting that she has inked a two-year deal extending until 2026.
“Fatima Zahra Tagnaout (Casablanca, Morocco, 20/01/1999), has become a new player for Sevilla FC. The Moroccan international departs from AS FAR, the club where she spent a significant part of her career,” read the statement from the club. This move marks a milestone as she becomes the first Moroccan woman to don the Rojiblancas jersey. Interestingly, her compatriot Youssef En-Nesyri is set to leave Andalusia for a move to Fenerbahçe.
Tagnaout’s transition mirrors that of Ghizlane Chebbak
The left-winger arrives in Spain with a decorated career, including several national titles. Her vast international experience with the Atlas Lionesses (48 caps) is anticipated to be a valuable asset. Tagnaout’s accolades include winning the North African Football Union (UNAF) tournament in 2020, being a finalist at the Aisha Buhari Cup in 2021, and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2022. She also made her mark in the World Cup, reaching the round of 16, and was subsequently named the best Africa-based player at the CAF Awards last year.
Tagnaout’s move to Spain follows in the footsteps of another AS FAR standout, Ghizlane Chebbak, her captain on the national team with 71 caps and 3 goals. Chebbak joined FC Levante Planas last February, where she plays alongside fellow Moroccans Yasmin Mrabet and Anissa Lahmari.
This move signifies an important step for Tagnaout and highlights the growing presence of Moroccan talent in European football.
