FIFA Updates World Rankings: African Teams Underperform

The FIFA rankings have been updated as of this Thursday, reflecting the aftermath of major tournaments such as Euro 2024 and Copa America. While the top 10 African teams remain unchanged in terms of their continental standings, several have seen a decline on the global stage.

Morocco and Algeria Slip, Egypt Holds Steady, RDC Makes Gains

Morocco, still Africa’s top team, has dropped from 12th to 14th place globally. Similarly, Algeria has slid two spots to 46th, and Cameroon has dropped to 51st amid internal disputes within the coaching staff. Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, and Nigeria each fell by one position, landing at 19th, 38th, and 39th, respectively. The biggest decline was seen by Mali, plummeting three spots to 53rd. Exceptions to this downward trend were Egypt and Tunisia, both of which maintained their previous rankings.

Below the top 10, South Africa and Angola each climbed two positions to 57th and 90th, respectively. The Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC) also moved up one spot to 60th, matching the progress of Equatorial Guinea, which rose to 88th. Conversely, Ghana, Guinea, Gabon, Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, and Benin held their positions. Zambia, however, dropped two places to 92nd, making it the only top 20 African team to decline significantly.

On the global front, Argentina and France continue to dominate the top two spots, with newly crowned European champions Spain vaulting to third place. The next FIFA ranking update is scheduled for September 19.
