Manchester City challenge Premier League rules in legal battle

Manchester City have announced today that they are taking legal action against the Premier League in an unprecedented move.

Manchester City argue that the financial regulations imposed in 2021 following the Saudi Public Investment Fund’s takeover of Newcastle United are unfair and discriminatory.

These rules were introduced to limit the spending of Manchester City and Newcastle, and to restrict sponsorship deals, due to their ownership of other clubs and their links to Gulf ownership.

According to The Times, Manchester City have submitted a 165-page legal dossier alleging that they are victims of “discrimination”. The club has also described the rules as a “tyranny of the majority”, noting that 14 of the 20 clubs in the league voted in favor of them, while Manchester City and Newcastle opposed them.

This move is a significant escalation in the dispute between Manchester City and the Premier League, and could have serious consequences for the future of both clubs in the English top flight.
