Athletic Bilbao crowned Copa del Rey champions after penalty shootout win over Real Mallorca

Athletic Bilbao have achieved a historic feat by winning the Copa del Rey for the 24th time after defeating Real Mallorca 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time.

Real Mallorca took the lead in the 21st minute through Daniel Rodriguez, but Athletic Bilbao equalized in the second half through Oihan Sancet in the 54th minute.

The match was a closely contested affair, but Athletic Bilbao eventually prevailed in the shootout.

This is the first time Athletic Bilbao have won the Copa del Rey since 2021, and it is their first title of the season.

Athletic Bilbao coach Marcelino expressed his delight at the achievement, saying:

“This title means a lot to us, we have worked hard all season to achieve it.”

He added:

“I would like to thank all the players and the fans for their continued support.”

Real Mallorca coach Javier Aguirre was disappointed with his team’s loss, but he praised Athletic Bilbao for their victory.
