Olympic dream over for Couhaib Driouech after serious knee injury
Excelsior attacker Couhaib Driouech has suffered a serious knee injury that will rule him out for the rest of the season and end his hopes of playing in the Olympics.
The 22-year-old, who has been capped twice by Morocco, sustained the injury in a challenge during Excelsior’s 2-1 defeat to Eindhoven in the Dutch Eredivisie on Saturday.
An MRI scan on Monday revealed that Driouech had torn a cruciate ligament in his right knee. He is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days and will be sidelined for six to eight months.
The injury is a major blow to Driouech who had been in good form for Excelsior this season, scoring six goals in 21 appearances.
He had also been hoping to impress Morocco coach Vahid Halilhodzic and earn a place in the squad for the Tokyo Olympics, which take place from July 23 to August 8.
However, that dream is now over for Driouch, who will instead focus on his rehabilitation and returning to action for Excelsior next season.
